Screen Talk 302: How Oscar Inclusion

As the fall movie season takes flight, so does awards season, even in an unusual year. The past week saw one of the more dramatic additions to the news cycle surrounding the Oscars, even though it won’t impact this year’s contenders: New inclusion rules established by the Academy, going into effect by 2024, that require diversity either behind or in front of the camera. The surprising move has elicited praise and backlash from different corners of the industry, but it remains to be seen exactly how many these changes will impact any future contenders for the gold.

In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson discuss the Academy’s decision and how it embodies the challenges faced by the industry as a whole. They also discuss the fall festival experience as TIFF begins, sharing some of the films they’ve enjoyed so far (from “The Disciple” to “One Night in Miami”) and others they can’t wait to check out.
